Terms of use

Overview

These terms apply when you use the Online Harms Taxonomy Library (OHTL) website, ohtl.org. By using the site, you accept them.

The site is free to use, and you do not need an account. If you do not accept these terms, please do not use the site.

Who we are

At the moment, "OHTL" is the name used for this initiative. OHTL is not incorporated, and the site is run by one person, David Sant. In these terms, "we" and "us" mean him. If more people join, or OHTL incorporates, we will update these terms to say who runs the site.

To contact us about these terms, email contact@ohtl.org.

Not legal advice

Nothing on ohtl.org is legal advice. The site describes published taxonomies of online harm and how they relate to each other, for general information. It does not tell you what any law or regulation requires of you. If you need to know how a law or a regulator's guidance applies to you, read the source itself and take advice from a qualified lawyer.

Accuracy

We take care to describe each source accurately and to link to the exact edition we used. But we do not promise that the site is complete, accurate or up to date, and publishers revise their documents. The publisher's own document is the authoritative version.

Including a source on the site does not mean we endorse it, and we do not rank taxonomies. Publishers do not endorse OHTL unless they say so.

If you find a mistake, please email contact@ohtl.org.

Using our content

We plan to publish OHTL's data and schema under open licences, which we have yet to choose. Each will state its licence when it is published, and that licence will apply to it in place of this section.

Until then, you are welcome to read, link to, quote and cite the text on ohtl.org, as long as you say it comes from the Online Harms Taxonomy Library and link to the page. For any other use, please ask us first.

The Inter font used on the site is licensed under the SIL Open Font License.

Source documents

The taxonomies, guidance and other documents we work with belong to their publishers. Publishers keep the copyright in their documents, and their names and logos belong to them. Where we link to a source document or to a copy in an open repository or web archive, the publisher's own terms apply to your use of it, not these terms.

If you are a publisher and think we have used your material in a way your terms do not allow, please email contact@ohtl.org, and we will look into it promptly.

Using the site

Please do not misuse the site. In particular, do not:

  • try to get unauthorised access to the site, or to the systems it runs on
  • introduce viruses or other harmful code
  • overload the site, for example with automated requests sent faster than a person would browse
  • use the site for anything unlawful

You are welcome to link to any page on ohtl.org. Please do not suggest that we endorse you or your organisation, unless we have agreed to it.

Other websites

The site links to other websites, such as publishers' pages, open repositories and web archives. We are not responsible for their content, availability or terms, and a link to a site does not mean we endorse it.

Availability

We run the site from the UK. It covers laws and guidance from many countries, but it does not say which of them apply to you. If you use the site from outside the UK, you are responsible for complying with the laws that apply where you are.

We aim to keep the site available, but we do not promise that it will always be available or free from errors. We may change, suspend or remove any part of it at any time.

Our liability

We provide the site free of charge and for general information. As far as the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage that comes from using the site, or from relying on anything on it.

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes any liability that the law does not allow us to limit or exclude, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud. If you are a consumer, nothing in these terms affects the rights you have under the law of the country where you live that cannot be excluded or limited by agreement.

Your personal information

The privacy notice explains how we use personal information, and the cookies page explains that the site does not use cookies.

Law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales can deal with any dispute about them.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when we publish OHTL's data under an open licence. The version on this page applies each time you use the site. These terms were last updated on 2 October 2026.
